Greek consultant volleyball coach Petroglou Petros, who is currently in Sri Lanka under the special patronage of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), has been instructed to commence training of the Sri Lanka national men’s volleyball squad from early April, according to the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation (SLVB).
A 24-member national pool has already been selected, and preparations are set to begin in the first week of April under the guidance of the experienced foreign coach.
Petros is a highly accomplished Level 3 qualified international coach, bringing extensive experience from working with both junior and senior teams across Europe, the Gulf region, and South Asia.
Speaking to the Daily Mirror, SLVB Secretary General Wing Commander Akila Alwis said, “We look forward to his expertise and leadership in elevating the standards of volleyball in Sri Lanka and achieving greater success on the international stage.”
The Greek coach has been recruited on a one-year contract, with a focus on preparing the national team for several upcoming international competitions, including the 2027 South Asian Games and the Central Asian Volleyball Championship.
The FIVB has agreed to pay a monthly allowance of 3,000 Swiss Francs (approximately Rs. 1.2 million) to the coach. In addition, accommodation, meals, and local travel expenses will be covered by the Ministry of Sports.
Meanwhile, a foreign beach volleyball specialist coach has also arrived in Sri Lanka, marking the first time that both indoor and beach volleyball international coaches are working simultaneously in the country.
