The Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) yesterday ceremonially laid the foundation stone for a FIFA Arena Mini Pitch in Negombo, marking a key step in strengthening grassroots football development in the country.
The FIFA Arena initiative, introduced by FIFA, aims to install over 1,000 mini pitches worldwide within the next two years to promote inclusive access to football. Sri Lanka is one of only three Asian countries selected for the pilot phase of this global programme.
Under the initiative, two FIFA Arena mini pitches have been allocated to Sri Lanka—one in Kotte and the other in Negombo. The Negombo project officially commenced with the foundation stone being laid by Deputy Minister of Sports Sugath Tilakaratna, in the presence of FFSL President Umar Jaswar and several local dignitaries.
The FIFA Arena mini pitch is designed to provide free access to underprivileged children and school communities, offering a safe and modern environment to play football. The project also aims to contribute to social development by encouraging discipline, teamwork, leadership and healthy lifestyles, while helping steer youth away from drug-related risks.
Construction of the Negombo facility is expected to be completed by March, after which it will be officially opened for community use.
