The prestigious and historic Governor’s Cup returned in grand style on April 15, 2025, at the scenic Nuwara Eliya Racecourse, with the event proudly sponsored by M/s. Edwards Collections. First run in 1892, this iconic meet continues to draw top talent and thrilling finishes. Despite a challenging downpour, the spirit of competition was undampened as five exhilarating races unfolded, backed by M/s. Edwards Collections, HI Magazine, Sporting Star, and Sporting Times.

The spotlight of the day belonged to EDDIE THE EAGLE, a recent import from India, who soared to victory in the Governor’s Cup 2025. Owned by Mr. & Mrs. Gamini and Chamari Jayarathne, the champion was brilliantly ridden by Indian-based jockey M.S. Deora and expertly trained by S.V. Mathialagan. Under testing track conditions, Eddie’s commanding run sealed his place in history.

Another jewel of the day, the time-honoured Queen’s Cup, also sponsored by M/s. Edwards Collections, witnessed SQUARE THE CIRCLE, another Indian import, emerge victorious. Owned by Mr. Hasanga Jayaratne and Paba Jayaratne, the horse was once again piloted to glory by M.S. Deora and conditioned by the unstoppable S.V. Mathialagan, showcasing a dominant stable performance. The opening race, sponsored by HI Magazine, saw ZULU FANTASY, owned by Mr. & Mrs. Edwards, capture a confident win under jockey P.S. Kaviraj, with training duties managed by S.D. Mahesh. The second race, backed by Sporting Star, was claimed by the impressive SHAAS COMRADE, owned by Mr. Hasanga Jayaratne and Paba Jayaratne, masterfully ridden by Indian jockey P. Sai Kumar, and trained by S.V. Mathialagan.

Rounding off the thrilling day, the third race sponsored by Sporting Times was taken by BIG TREASURE, another winner for the Jayaratne duo. With Indian rider P. Vikramr aboard and S.V. Mathialagan once again handling training duties, the team celebrated a third remarkable win.

This year’s Governor’s Cup meet not only upheld tradition but also showcased a day of extraordinary achievements and standout performances by a winning combination of owners, jockeys, and trainers.
