S. Thomas’, after undergoing some anxious moments in the first half and conceding a lead to Sri Sumangala Kandy, fought back in the second half to record a 31-24 win in the pre-quarterfinal encounter of the Dialog Schools Rugby Knockout tournament played at Havelock Park yesterday.
The Thomians, having conceded a 12-17 lead to the Sumangalians, accumulated their points through three goals and two tries to the two goals and two tries scored by Sri Sumangala.
The closely contested game saw the Sumangalians making the first move with an unconverted try and the Thomians going into the lead with a try scored that was converted.
From there on it was a ding-dong battle as the Sumangalians struck back with the third try of the match, which was converted, and the Thomians with an unconverted try to make it 12-all before the Sumangalians went ahead with another unconverted try to go into half-time leading 17-12.
On resumption, the Sumangalians stretched their lead with a try that was converted, and that was all that they were able to achieve, as the Thomians, playing with much cohesion, succeeded in breaching the Sumangala defence, planting three tries, of which one was converted, to come out victorious 31-24.
