A King is Born: Trinity Old Boys Choir Takes the Stage on DEC. 16

I will extol the Lord at all times, His praise shall always be in my lips (Ps. 34:1) ……….so sang King David as he worshipped the Lord. And singing is what drew some 10–15 Trinitians of yesteryear to continue worshiping Him with the talent He had blessed them with.

The Trinity College Old Boys’ Choir began three years ago and includes members who have sung under the baton of Gordon Burrows, Kay Cripps (wife of Rev. Michael Cripps), Nimal Lekamge, Ronnie Thangiah, Dilanthi Premawardena, Walter Perera, and, currently, LassanthaTennekoon.

The OBA Choir practices are held twice weekly at the Central YMCA Fort Chapel. Johnson Gnanadass currently trains the choir (taking over from his brother, Rev. Wilson Gnanadass, who is presently serving the Anglican Parish at Bandarawela). While singing and worshipping are going on, it is also a time to reflect and thank the Lord for bringing together choristers from many walks of life.

There are doctors, engineers, bankers, chartered accountants, journalists, and many others from all walks of life. All coming together after a hard day’s work. And they have this one desire to give thanks to God and sing together. All the carols are carefully chosen to present the Christmas Story and the marvelous birth of our Savior and Redeemer.

Among the collection chosen from the years gone by are Tamil and Sinhala carols. And, this year’s Sinhala Carol is “Enna Punchi Lamainey” a composition of H.L.Fernandoa, former chorister from the mid-70s which was originally sung by the Trinity College Kandy Choir at the Carol service in 1978. A break in between gives time to meet, greet, and encourage one another. Food takes the form of short eats such as rolls, patties etc, and the YMCA Canteen serves up hot cups of coffee or tea. All these are paid for by well-wishers from the choir ranks. Fun, fellowship and laughter is evident all the time.

This will reach its culmination with the Carol service titled ‘ A KING IS BORN’ on Tuesday the 16th of December 2025 from 6.30 pm onwards at Christ Church Galle Face, Colombo 3.

(This Church was chosen as it had the joy of being served by a former Trinity Principal and Vice Principal who had ministered here.)

While these joyous songs spell out the Christmas story, music lovers are also welcome to join in the singing of Christmas carols, old and new. We would love to have you the Trinity family, along with friends, join us this year.
