As Sri Lanka prepares to depart for the Asian Youth Games 2025 in Manama, Bahrain, National Olympic Committee (NOC) President Suresh Subramaniam called the occasion a defining milestone for the nation’s young athletes — and a fresh beginning for the country’s Olympic ambitions.
Delivering his opening remarks at the official send-off ceremony held in Colombo, Subramaniam described the Games as “a valuable event” that will serve as a foundation for the next generation of Olympians.
“After 13 years, the Olympic Council of Asia has revived the Asian Youth Games. Most of you are 18 and below, and this will serve our Asian region — particularly Sri Lanka — as a base to look forward to what you want to be in two years, five years, or ten years,” he told the athletes.
Subramaniam, a former Davis Cup athlete himself, reflected on how much the sporting landscape had evolved:
“When we participated in sport, we never had a base. We were thrown into the mid-sea — we had to swim or sink. I think I swam, otherwise I wouldn’t be here,” he smiled. “Now you all have an opportunity at this age to decide your future.
Whatever shortcomings you have now, you have time to correct them and move to the next level.”
He also acknowledged the Ministry of Sports for its crucial role in making the contingent’s participation possible.
“When I had the initial meeting, they said it was very difficult to find funds. Finding money is always the hardest part — but today I can proudly say the Ministry of Sports has funded your entire travel, accommodation, and meals. That is a great step forward, particularly for youth,” Subramaniam stated.
The NOC President emphasised that beyond medals, the Games are about nurturing character and teamwork.
“We want to nurture you to be good citizens — not only winners, but winners in the right way. Win by fair play, not by cheating,” he urged. “We are going as one Sri Lanka. Support each other, be there for your teammates — that’s how we bring honour to our country.”
He extended his gratitude to the organising committees, sponsors, and volunteers who worked for months to make the campaign possible.
“I must thank Dilshan Mohamed, chairman of the Sponsorship Committee, and Pathiravithana, who worked hard for six months to produce the Good Sport magazine Youth edition for the athletes.
Take one for yourself, give one to your school principal or class teacher — let them know you are representing Sri Lanka with pride.”
Subramaniam reminded the young athletes to stay mentally strong and vigilant throughout the Games.
