The Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) holds significant importance to Sri Lanka, serving as a symbol of the country’s diplomatic relations and cultural heritage.
BMICH was built as a gift from China to Sri Lanka, symbolising the friendship and cooperation between the two nations. It was named after Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, Sri Lanka’s first and has since become a national landmark.
BMICH hosts various cultural events, exhibitions, and performances, promoting Sri Lankan arts and culture.
It provides a platform for local artisans and entrepreneurs to showcase their talents, contributing to the country’s economy.
BMICH has hosted numerous high-profile international conferences, including the Non-Aligned Movement Summit, during PM Sirimao Bandaranaike’s time, making her the most popular female politician of that era. The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting was also held there. BMICH generates revenue for the country through hosting international events, conferences, and exhibitions. It provides a platform for businesses to connect and explore opportunities, contributing to Sri Lanka’s economic growth. I was shocked and ashamed to hear about the proposed closure of the police station at BMICH. As a daily commuter in Colombo 7, I have witnessed the importance of this station in maintaining law and order. The police station has been a vital part of the area, providing assistance and ensuring public safety.
The police station at BMICH has been serving the community for many years, and its closure would be a significant loss. I urge the authorities to reconsider this decision and prioritise the safety and security of citizens.
I hope the authorities will take into account the concerns of the community and find alternative solutions to address any challenges. The police station at BMICH is an essential resource that maintains security on 24 hour basis and should not be demolished just because the Bandaranaike name is involved with BMICH.
