One of the main news items in yesterday’s papers was regarding the deaths of two individuals due to suspected infection from a new COVID strain. This is amidst the healthcare sector dealing with a surge of dengue and chikungunya cases. While the numbers are being recorded by the health units, the public is placing their trust in the healthcare sector to ensure that deaths could be prevented in this case. Sri Lanka witnessed a severe outbreak of COVID during the height of the pandemic which could have been averted if proper measures were being taken. However the authorities seem to have taken it lightly assuming that the situation could be contained in case a major outbreak takes place. If the government is concerned about its people it could start taking precautions to ensure that the borders are secured with antigen kits and PCR testing facilities to send any positive patients to hospitals immediately. There was a time when Sri Lankan authorities revealed that a health minister kissed the first Chinese woman who was infected with COVID on the forehead once she recovered from the illness. This moment was celebrated as well. This is not a moment to celebrate but a moment to plan, prepare and save the people of this country.
