In a world where mental health struggles are often overlooked, Sri Lanka stands at a critical turning point. With an alarming suicide rate of 3,500 lives lost last year and countless others suffering in silence, the need for urgent intervention is undeniable. Addressing this crisis head-on, Rotary Club of Colombo Mid Town and Rotary Club of Colombo Port City, under Rotary International District 3220, have launched ‘Healing Minds Matter’—a movement committed to transforming mental health in Sri Lanka.
This initiative is more than just a project; it is a call to action to break the stigma, build awareness, and ensure that no one suffers alone.

Leadership with Purpose: Champions of Change

At the helm of this life-changing initiative are Rasini Bandara, President of the Rotary Club of Colombo Mid Town, and Michael Jayawardana, President of the Rotary Club of Colombo Port City. Together, their vision, expertise, and dedication have mobilised Rotarians, mental health professionals and corporate leaders to create an unprecedented impact on mental wellness in Sri Lanka.
The Numbers Speak for Themselves:
260 individuals—including teachers, students, corporate professionals, and community leaders—have completed QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training, equipping them with the skills to identify and support those at risk.
5000 out of the targeted 10,000 individuals have already participated in mental health awareness sessions across schools, universities, and workplaces.
The upcoming Healing Minds Matter App by XigeniX will provide a digital platform for mental health resources and support.
By the end of this Rotary year, the initiative aims to train 300 suicide prevention gatekeepers and reach 10,000 individuals with mental health awareness programs, creating a powerful network of first responders and advocates for mental wellness.

Creating a Culture of Mental Well-Being

In Sri Lanka, mental health remains one of the most stigmatised topics, leaving thousands without support. Healing Minds Matter is actively changing this mindset through dynamic school sessions, corporate workshops, and community engagement programs that focus on stress management, emotional resilience, and suicide prevention.
Unlike traditional lectures, these sessions incorporate music, art, dance, theater, and drum therapy, making the experience interactive and engaging. Additionally, career guidance and leadership workshops are included, empowering individuals to navigate life’s challenges with confidence.
This initiative is not just about spreading awareness—it is about changing lives. Through the commitment of Rotarians and community leaders, Healing Minds Matter is breaking down barriers and making mental health a priority.

Building a Future for Mental Wellness

While training and awareness programs form the backbone of Healing Minds Matter, the project is also focused on long-term, sustainable change.
A major milestone is the refurbishment of the 10,000-square-foot Mental Health Wing at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo. This space, currently in a dilapidated state, will soon be transformed into a modern center for psychiatric care and training. Within this space, Sri Lanka’s first Rotary Mental Wellness Center will be established, providing counseling, training, and community outreach programs.
This initiative is about more than just physical infrastructure—it’s about building a future where mental health care is accessible, professional, and free from stigma.

The Healing Minds Matter App

Recognising the power of digital solutions in modern healthcare, Healing Minds Matter is pioneering technology-driven mental health support through the Healing Minds Matter App, developed by XigeniX.
Initially designed as a data and progress tracking tool, the app will eventually evolve into a fully-fledged mental health resource, connecting individuals to guidance, self-help tools, and professional support. In a digital age where mental health crises are on the rise, this tech-driven approach will ensure that support is just a tap away.
Mental health is not a luxury—it is a human right. Healing Minds Matter is an open invitation for individuals, corporate leaders, and policymakers to be part of a movement that is saving lives.
This initiative thrives on community involvement, corporate partnerships, and financial support. Your contribution—whether through funding, advocacy, or participation—can change the trajectory of mental health in Sri Lanka.
As Desmond Tutu once said, “There comes a point where we need to stop just pulling people out of the river. We need to go upstream and find out why they’re falling in.” Healing Minds Matter is doing just that—addressing the root causes of mental health challenges, fostering awareness, and creating a sustainable support system for those in need.
This is Sri Lanka’s defining moment for mental health awareness. This is your opportunity to make a difference.
Join the movement. Support Healing Minds Matter. Because mental well-being is everyone’s responsibility.
