Paddy cultivators in the Tissamaharama area who resorted to transplanting and cultivated green gram have reaped a bumper harvest. They said they cultivated 13,000 acres of green gram this year in paddy fields after the paddy harvest in the Yala season.
Meanwhile, Cargills Ltd has taken steps to purchase green gram directly from the farmers providing them with a remunerative market. The company yesterday purchased the first stock of 20,000 kilos of green gram from the farmers for Rs.455 per kilo. The purchasing scheme was implemented at the Weerawila SATHOSA stores complex under the supervision of Hambantota District Secretary H. P. Sumanasekara. Several senior officials of the Department of Agriculture were present at the occasion.
