Parliament was informed yesterday that seven Mahaviru Day commemorations held in the North in November last year had promoted the LTTE.

An answer tabled by the Minister of Public Security in response to an oral question raised by Opposition MP Dayasiri Jayasekara stated that intelligence units had observed attempts to promote the LTTE during these events.

Files on three events have been referred to the Attorney General for legal advice, while investigations into the others are ongoing.

It was also revealed that some representatives and activists in the East had made efforts to commemorate those who died in the war. Authorities reported that plans were underway to revive and promote the LTTE through these commemorative activities.

Instructions were issued to all Officers-in-Charge (OICs) of the relevant police stations to arrest the organizers of these events under the Prevention of Terrorism Act No. 48 of 1979 and to produce them in court.

Investigations are ongoing, and further action will depend on the findings.

It was further revealed that a total of 212 Mahaviru Day commemorations were held in the North in November last year.
