The Career Day at the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT), a higher educational institution in Colombo, witnessed a significant surge in participation this year, with the number of job candidates nearly doubling.

According to IIT’s Placement Coordinator, Hiruni Samarage, the event saw an impressive increase from 880 to 1,600 attendees, providing a valuable platform for corporate companies to connect with potential recruits.

Held at the Sirimavo Hall of the BMICH, on Tuesday, in a large-scale manner, the opportunity was presented to the second year’s students, going for internship through the Career Day.

Numerous prominent companies were seen busily interviewing and dealing in the recruitment process, including major brands namely, PickMe, IFS, 99x, Brandix, WSO2 and MAS.

“IFS takes closer to 100. WSO2, Brandix and MAS, there are so many other companies, including our parent company Informatics International Limited is also here, today. There are a lot of big and good companies. We can’t say any of the company’s here are so small, because they’ve paid to have their stall. All of these companies are progressing well in the industry”, Samarage, also a lecturer, said.

Though demand is towards IT and the rapidly-growing AI, Samarage said it’s a fluctuating pattern.

“All the companies have business and IT operations. Even for pure business companies having come in today, they have business & IT departments. On the other hand, IT companies also have project management, marketing, and internship opportunities as well”, she reasoned out.

Inthira Satheeshkumar, Associate Leader of People Operations, of WS02, commenting on this said, “It’s been a really huge event. We come every year, every year we see a great amount of students, it’s just full of energy, all very vibrant and going really good”.

In the meantime, Eranga Bowatte, a Human Resource Executive for MAS, speaking said the employment fair has been a massive event and they in turn a learn lot of the calibre of the IIT students.

“I see there is a huge preference towards IT. Mostly it is going to be software engineers, because there is a very good calibre of software undergraduates here. Potentially, there are also project management students also here. Business Managements, there were good numbers, but mainly it would be for software engineers”.
