Geography teacher arrested for allegedly sexually abusing 14-year-old girl

A 39-year-old geography teacher from a school in Devinuwara has been arrested over allegations of sexually abusing a 14-year-old student.   

The Matara Division Children and Women’s Bureau took the suspect into custody following multiple complaints and a statement from the victim.   

Police revealed that the girl, a Grade 9 student, who lost her mother and was abandoned by her father, lives with her grandparents.   

The suspect had reportedly built a close relationship with the girl, frequently visiting her home with gifts to gain the grandparents’ trust.   

According to the victim’s statement recorded on May 11, the teacher allegedly abused her and even promised to marry her after divorcing his wife.   

The suspect was arrested on Monday and is to be produced before court on charges of sexual abuse and grooming for sexual acts.
