New Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday said he accepted his new post to save the nation through its present crisis.

“I accepted the Prime Minister’s post to save the nation and to ensure that people of this country consume three square meals while essentials such as fuel, gas and electricity are made available. I cannot do these things alone and therefore need international help,” Wickremesinghe said.

He was speaking to journalists after engaging in religious observances at the Walukarama Temple Kollupitiya last evening. “I also intend to obtain the support of all MPs in Parliament to save the nation,” he added.
He said that he had no objections to the continuation of the ongoing protests at Gota Go Gama. “We will not lay our hands on Gota Go Gama at Galle Face,” he added.

Wickremesinghe became Prime Minister of Sri Lanka for the sixth time yesterday. He was sworn in as solitary UNP national list MP on June 23 2021 and became the Prime Minister ten and a half months after becoming an MP.
