The Deanna School of Dancing, Sri Lanka’s premier ballet school, recently enchanted audiences with its vibrant and beautifully staged adaptation of The Nutcracker ballet. Presented over three days at the Bishop’s College Auditorium, the production brought together more than 450 students—from the youngest performers to advanced dancers alike—to showcase the depth of talent, artistry, and dedication nurtured at the school.
For decades, The Nutcracker has been a cherished part of ballet tradition across the world, and is known for its whimsical story, iconic score by Tchaikovsky, and its ability to transport audiences into a world of magic and wonder. The Deanna School of Dancing’s adaptation honored the essence of this much-loved work while infusing it with rich choreography by Natalie and Natasha Jayasuriya. Alongside the school’s renowned Founder, Deanna Jayasuriya, and its team of teachers, they worked to create a world-class show that not only dazzled at every turn, but also gave many dancers the chance to make a memorable debut and shine on stage.
Commenting on the show, Natalie Jayasuriya, Vice Principal of the Deanna School of Dancing said, “The Nutcracker has always held a special place in my heart—not only for its timeless beauty, but for the opportunity it gives to breathe life into every character. As a choreographer, I am passionate about shaping movement into storytelling, and this production allowed me to bring out the very best in each dancer. Watching the characters grow into their roles with grace, discipline and emotion has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey. I am incredibly proud of what we’ve created together.”

Highlighting the benefits of this concert, Natasha Jayasuriya, Principal of the Deanna School of Dancing, explained, “Being part of a ballet concert of this scale, allows our dancers to build lasting bonds with each other and grow in character, camaraderie and confidence. Hours of rehearsals, consistent practicing and hard work culminated with our students taking to the stage and dancing with passion and joy. For many of them, this was their first formal performance, and a truly important milestone in their artistic journeys. This production also fostered a deep sense of community throughout our school, as parents, well-wishers, alumni, our backstage crew, partners, sponsors and staff all rallied together, to help us make it a success.”
This creative adaptation brought the story of Clara and her enchanted Nutcracker doll to the stage with impressive digital backdrops, intricate dance sequences, action-packed scenes and elaborate costumes designed by JoJo’s. The adventure began in the Magician’s workshop where the school’s youngest stars, the Dolls, Teddy Bears, Spinning Tops and Jacks-in-the-Box shone with their well-rehearsed steps, twirls and colourful kits. As the set switched to a wintery Christmas Eve at Clara’s House, a spirited soirée took place with the Guests at the Party—a cross-section of students from the middle and senior school arriving—their elegant dance formation en pointe concluding with a playful family dance between Clara, her brother Fritz, and their Mother. The arrival of the Magician brought more intrigue to the gathering, with his presentation of a delightful dancing Doll and his gift of a Nutcracker to Clara. After the party, Clara awoke in the night to find an army of mice scurrying around her, led by their fearsome Mouse King. The Nutcracker then sprung to life in her defense and led his own army of soldiers in a dramatic battle sequence.

With Clara’s help the Nutcracker defeated the Mouse King, and in thanks he invited her on a magical journey to the Land of the Sweets. Here, Clara was treated to a magnificent celebration in her honor and greeted by the elegant Sugar Plum Fairy. An array of culturally diverse performances from all around the world followed—including a fiery Spanish dance, a fluid Arabian piece, an energetic Russian dance and a spritely Chinese variation—each of the respective dance leaders demonstrated technical mastery, depth of emotion and brilliant showmanship. Throughout the concert, Clara radiated featherlight grace and her sweet charm paired well with the Nutcracker’s strength and agility. The grand finale in scene three, featured the Waltz of the Flowers, bringing the night to a close with an ensemble of ballerinas moving in tulles of pink and mauve, effortlessly executing a series of turns, grand jetés, and pas de chats with poise and finesse.
Commenting on the concert and the rich history of the school, Deanna Jayasuriya, the renowned Founder of the Deanna School of Dancing said, “Since our inception in 1980, we have had a long-standing tradition of bringing well-loved ballet adaptations to the stage in Sri Lanka. I am extremely proud of our students, who reached for the stars this year and showcased the best of their skills, hard work and talent. May they continue to grow and flourish as dancers, and build on the legacy of excellence that we have established at the Deanna School of Dancing, over the last four decades.”
The Deanna School of Dancing has been at the forefront of classical ballet training in Sri Lanka for 45 years and has been affiliated with the Royal Academy of Dance in the UK, since its inception. The school is committed to providing the highest standards of ballet education for both students and teachers alike, whilst also cultivating a love for movement and performance in dancers across all age groups.
