How bad has Sri Lanka’s World Cup campaign been?

In addition to conceding the highest total in a World Cup match to South Africa and then allowing Pakistan to record the highest-ever run chase, Thursday’s 302-run loss to India was Sri Lanka’s worst-ever defeat in the tournament.

Their total of 55 was their lowest ever in the tournament, and came just over a month since they were bowled out for 50, the last time the two teams met in the Asia Cup final.

The defeat has shaken Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) into action, with SLC calling for an urgent and comprehensive explanation from the entire coaching staff and selectors into the team’s performances at the tournament.

SLC has asked the coaches and selectors to address four key areas including the team’s Strategy and Preparation, Team Selection, player performance and post-match analysis.

But is questioning the coaching staff and selectors enough?

Shouldn’t the players take responsibility for their own attitudes and performances, or rather the lack of, during the tournament?

Also should SLC also not be held accountable for its part in the preparing the team and ensuring that the best possible players participate in such a high profile tournament?

Or are they trying to pass the blame onto others by calling for this explanation?
