Treasury has allocated funds to hold LG elections - Elections Commissioner

Commissioner General of the Election Commission Saman Sri Ratnayaka said the Treasury had allocated funds to hold the local government election.  

 He told media after a seminar at Nuwara Eliya Elections Office to create awareness on the responsibilities of the election monitors, civil society organizations and representatives of youth organizations in Nuwara Eliya area yesterday that all parliamentarians know that the local government election should be held before March 19. He said the Elections Commission was already taking steps to hold the election as scheduled.  


“The delimitation commission under its Chairman Asoka Peiris appointed in 2012 took three years to determine on the present strength of 8700 wards in local authorities. It is in force at present. The Elections Commission fulfills only its duties and responsibilities and would not make statements regarding matters irrelevant to it,” he said.  
He further said that a budget allocation of Rs.10 billon to hold elections was available this year.
