The United States has offered to help the government in its bid to enact legislation for the recovery of stolen assets believed to be stashed overseas, an official said.
U.S. Ambassador Julie Chung had mentioned it when she called on JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva recently to discuss the current status of politics and the future plans of the government.
Mr. Silva told Daily Mirror that the U.S. envoy asked about the government’s priorities.
“Economic stabilization is the first priority for us. Then, we are planning for a poverty alleviation programme. For that, she said her country would extend assistance, “ Mr. Silva said.
Besides, he said the discussion centred on investments into the country.
“There will be investments since there is no corruption now. We briefed her about plans for the enactment of assets recovery law,” he said.
After the meeting, the Ambassador said in a post on X, Pleased to have met with JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva to discuss our bilateral relationship and the many areas the U.S. partners with Sri Lanka —through education, innovation, trade, and security.”
