Sri Lanka’s tourism authorities are gearing up to host their first-ever tourism roadshow in Bangladesh, recognising the neighbouring South Asian nation as a rapidly emerging and high-potential source market.
The upcoming initiative is part of a broader strategic effort to diversify Sri Lanka’s tourist base and attract high-yielding visitors from the Asian region, helping to sustain arrival momentum throughout the year and specifically during the traditional off-peak seasons.
Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) Chairman Buddhika Hewawasam outlined the industry’s strategic shift toward prioritizing visitor value over sheer volume, emphasizing that Bangladesh aligns perfectly with the country’s new promotional focus.
With a burgeoning middle and upper class, Bangladesh is increasingly viewed as a lucrative market for premium travel segments, particularly the high-spending Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector.
The SLTDA has officially identified Bangladesh—alongside India, China, Russia, and Pakistan—as one of its top five primary target markets to drive the lucrative MICE tourism segment forward this year.
The targeted promotional push comes on the back of exceptional growth in visitor numbers from the neighboring nation. In 2025, Bangladesh emerged as one of Sri Lanka’s fastest-growing source markets, recording 59,563 arrivals for the full year. During certain peak months in 2025, Bangladesh even broke into the top five overall source markets for Sri Lanka, successfully displacing traditional European strongholds and highlighting robust regional connectivity.
To capitalise on this strong growth trajectory, the planned roadshow in Bangladesh will aim to forge stronger direct business connections between Sri Lankan hoteliers, destination management companies, and Bangladeshi tour operators. By actively showcasing specialized and high-value tourism products—ranging from luxury wellness retreats and boutique heritage properties to comprehensive MICE event facilities—authorities hope to firmly position Sri Lanka as a premier, easily accessible destination for affluent Bangladeshi travellers seeking premium leisure and corporate experiences.
