State Bank of India to open two new branches in Jaffna and Trinco

Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who is currently on a visit Sri Lanka, is expected to inaugurate two new branches of the State Bank of India (SBI) in Trincomalee and Jaffna today (Nov.3).


SBI is a public sector bank and is the largest in India. SBI has been operating in Sri Lanka since 1864. The Colombo branch of the bank was opened mainly to handle the business of export of coffee and the Government business.


Apart from Colombo, SBI Sri Lanka has branches in Wellawatte, Colpetty and Kandy.


During her visit, Minister Sitharaman delivered the keynote address at the India Sri Lanka Business Summit on the theme ‘Enhancing connectivity: Partnering for prosperity,’ organised by the Confederation of Indian Industries, Indo-Lanka Chamber of Commerce & Industry yesterday at Taj Samudra Hotel, Colombo.
