Seaspan and Ceyline Shipping officials cutting the anniversary partnership cake
Seaspan Corporation Pvt. Ltd., the world’s largest independent charter owner and operator of containerships and Ceyline Shipping Limited, Sri Lanka’s market leader in Seafarer Recruitment and Placement Services recently celebrated 20 years of transformative partnership at an event held at Hotel Taj Samudra.
The partnership, established in 2005 has grown from its first deployment of Sri Lankan officers aboard the vessel Dubai Express on December 25, 2005, to become a powerful force in maritime talent development. Today, over 630 onboard Sri Lankan seafarers serve aboard Seaspan’s operating fleet of 241+ vessels, with a total local talent pool exceeding 1,100 professionals.
Chief Operating Officer Seaspan Corporation Pvt. Ltd. Torsten Holst Pedersen addressing the celebrations said their partnership with Ceyline exemplifies operational excellence through people development.
“Together, we’ve built a talent pipeline that helps power our global operations. The exceptional training standards, dedication and professionalism of our seafarers have been instrumental in Seaspan’s success,” Pedersen said.
COO Ceyline Shipping Limited Captain S. B. S Lakmal addressing the event said, for two decades, their partnership with Seaspan has been transformative for the Sri Lankan maritime industry.
“We have developed hundreds of seafarers, many who started as cadets and now serve as Masters and Chief Engineers. This collaboration has strengthened Sri Lanka’s reputation globally as a trusted source of highly skilled maritime professionals, while creating sustainable career pathways and extending our impact through joint CSR initiatives into communities nationwide,” Capt. Lakmal said.
The collaboration has achieved remarkable milestones, including an industry-leading 95 percent retention rate and the successful management of 31 vessels fully manned by Sri Lankan ratings between 2023 – 2024 including seven advanced dual-fuel IGF vessels.
The dedicated Seaspan Training Room in Sri Lanka, unique to this partnership, has become a regional center of excellence, providing world-class instruction not only for Sri Lankan crew but for foreign seafarers across Seaspan’s global operations.
