Regen Renewables Chief Technology Officer Champika Periyapperuma and National System Control Centre Director Buddhika Samarasekara at official handover ceremony
Regen Renewables (Pvt.) Ltd recently marked another milestone in Sri Lanka’s renewable energy journey, with the successful completion and official handover of a 45.63 kW rooftop solar PV system to the former Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) at the National System Control Centre (NSCC) now known as National Operation Centre (NOC), located at No. 80, Parliament Road, Pelawatte, Battaramulla.
The project, which was awarded to Regen Renewables through a competitive tender process, was completed on schedule and within budget, reinforcing the company’s reputation for delivering high-quality renewable energy solutions to both public and private sector clients.
The official handover ceremony was conducted by Regen Renewables Chief Technology Officer Eng. Champika Periyapperuma to System Control Centre Director Eng. Buddhika Samarasekara, symbolising the strong institutional partnership between the two organisations.
The rooftop solar installation forms part of the CEB’s broader initiative to integrate renewable energy into its operational infrastructure while strengthening the sustainability of Sri Lanka’s national power system. Designed and engineered to ensure reliable performance and long-term energy generation, it also provides an important operational advantage for the NOC.
Speaking on the importance of the roof top solar system at the NOC office, Engineer Samarasekara commented that the system provides a mechanism for forecasting and validation of roof top solar generation in order to provide a better service to the consumers and investors.
With solar installation in place, the NSCC engineers have direct access to real-time solar generation data and insights into how utility system parameters impact solar performance at different times of the day and throughout the year. This data will play a critical role in improving the accuracy of solar resource prediction and supporting grid management as Sri Lanka continues to increase its share of renewable energy.
The project further builds on Regen Renewables’ successful collaboration with the CEB, following the completion of a 60-kW rooftop solar PV system at the CEB head office building in 2023. Together, these projects highlight the growing role of solar energy within the key operational facilities of Sri Lanka’s national utility provider.
Regen Renewables Managing Director Dr. Lakmal Fernando stated, “This project represents more than just another solar installation. It reflects the growing momentum towards renewable energy integration in Sri Lanka and the importance of partnerships between the private sector and national institutions. We are proud to support the CEB in advancing sustainable energy solutions while contributing to the country’s long-term energy security.
Eng. Periyapperuma, added, “Our engineering team worked closely with the CEB engineers to ensure that the system meets the highest technical standards. The project demonstrates the strength of local engineering expertise and our ability to deliver complex public-sector renewable energy projects with precision, reliability and professionalism.”
