Witness statement recording to go totally online soon: Justice Minister

Colombo, Feb 19 (Daily Mirror) - A new legislation will be introduced soon to do away with physical transportation of witnesses to and from courts and to record statements online, Minister of Justice Harshana Nanayakkara said.

This comes in the aftermath of the shooting at the Hulftsdorp Court Complex this morning, where a gunman disguised as a legal officer shot underworld figure Ganemulla Sanjeewa, who had arrived in court to testify in an ongoing case.

The Minister told the media that the new legislation will be gazetted soon.

“The government is taking the shoot inside the court in its full weight and arrangements will be made to step up security in and around courts,” he said after rushing to the court complex just after  the killing of underworld figure Ganemulla Sanjeewa.
