Teacher drowns in bid to save student

Colombo, May 27 (Daily Mirror) - A teacher of Waikumbura Tamil Junior school in Badalkumbura drowned in his attempt to save a schoolgirl who got into difficulty while having a sea bath in the sea off Kirinda during an educational tour.

The victim N.M.M.Nujum (56) was the mathematics teacher of the school and was a resident of Elaspotha in Badalkumbura.

Police said a group of students with the Principal and several teachers on an educational tour organised by the school were having a sea bath in Kirinda when one of the schoolgirls got into difficulty. The teacher in his attempt to save her had fallen victim and drowned. Police life guards and residents had brought them ashore and admitted them to the Debarawewa Base Hospital where the teacher was pronounced dead on admission. The school girl was admitted for further treatment.

Kirinda police are conducting further investigations.
