Feb.24. Colombo (Mirror Sports) - Sri Lanka will be desperate to correct their course when they take on New Zealand in a crucial Super Eight encounter of the T20 World Cup in Colombo on Wednesday.

After faltering in their opening Super Eight fixture, the hosts must secure a victory to keep their semi-final hopes alive. Sri Lanka’s batting struggles against slower bowlers were exposed in their previous outing, where they failed to chase a modest 147 against England on a slow Pallekele surface.

The batting-friendly conditions seen in co-host nation India have not been replicated in Sri Lanka, where pitches have generally favoured bowlers. The trend is expected to continue at the R. Premadasa Stadium, where larger boundaries make six-hitting a tougher task.
Sri Lanka’s shot selection came under scrutiny following the heavy defeat, and the team will need a more disciplined approach against a well-balanced New Zealand attack.

Pathum Nissanka has led the charge with the bat so far, while left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage has impressed with the ball. The pace attack has also delivered consistently, giving the hosts confidence heading into the must-win contest.

New Zealand, meanwhile, shared points with Pakistan after their match at Premadasa was washed out. The Black Caps boast a strong spin department led by skipper Mitchell Santner and will be equally determined to register their first Super Eight victory.

The opening pair of Finn Allen and Tim Seifert looked in ominous touch during the league stage and will aim to continue that momentum. Rachin Ravindra, fresh from a confidence-boosting half-century against Canada, is also expected to play a key role in the middle order.

With rain unlikely to intervene, both sides are set for a high-stakes battle as the Super Eight race gathers momentum in Colombo.
