Colombo, June 16 (Daily Mirror) - The Angunakolapelessa Magistrate’s Court has imposed a fine of Rs. 500,000 on Biz Bakers (Pvt) Ltd in Ranna for selling bottled drinking water above the Maximum Retail Price (MRP), the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) said.
The case was filed by officers attached to the CAA’s Hambantota District Office following an investigation which revealed that the company had sold a one-litre bottle of drinking water at Rs. 120 despite the MRP being fixed at Rs. 100 under a Gazette notification issued by the Authority.
The court imposed the fine after the company pleaded guilty to the charge on June 15.
The CAA urged consumers to remain vigilant when purchasing essential commodities, including bottled drinking water and rice, and to ensure that traders adhere to government-regulated prices.
The Authority also called on the public to report instances of overcharging or other consumer rights violations through its 1977 hotline during office hours.
