Colombo, August 11 (Daily Mirror) - Ports trade union leader Shyamal Sumanaratne today (11) filed a complaint with the Commission to Investigate Bribery or Corruption, alleging that the government is wasting over Rs. 50 million by altering the gate and access road system of Colombo Port’s Eastern Terminal.
The original gate and access road system was developed at a cost exceeding Rs. 50 million and completed in 2014. However, in 2021, a decision was made to change this system, and after the current government took office, the new Managing Director of the Ports Authority began implementing new road planning for private terminals.
Sumanaratne noted that a steering committee chaired by the Minister in charge of Ports was appointed following opposition from the Wahama Port Trade Union Alliance. This committee, which included several officials, conducted a scientific comparison and confirmed that the existing gate system was the most beneficial plan for Sri Lanka.
Despite this, the trade unions say the plan to change the gate and road system has not been reversed. Instead, new committees and officials have been appointed to continue the process.
The Joint Alliance of Port Trade Unions has requested the Bribery or Corruption Investigation Commission to take swift action on the alleged misuse of state funds connected to the new Managing Director’s decision. They demand that those responsible be prosecuted under corruption and bribery laws.
After submitting the complaint, Sumanaratne said he acted as a port employee concerned about trade union leaders being targeted under the current government. He urged the Commission to hold accountable anyone responsible for wrongdoing related to either the old or new road systems, regardless of political affiliation.
