The Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (IOTWS), through its Tsunami Service Provider in Indonesia (InaTEWS-BMKG), has confirmed that there is no tsunami threat in the Indian Ocean following a powerful undersea earthquake that struck off the East Coast of Kamchatka.
In its Public Tsunami Bulletin Number 2, issued at 01:53 UTC on July 30, 2025, the agency stated that the situation is being closely monitored and that the bulletin is intended for areas bordering the Indian Ocean.
The earthquake, which occurred on July 29, 2025, at 23:24:54 UTC, registered a magnitude of 8.6 Mwp (revised) and struck at a depth of 43 kilometers. The epicenter was located at latitude 52.54N and longitude 160.07E, off the east coast of Kamchatka, a seismically active region in the Russian Far East.
Authorities said that while the tremor was significant in magnitude, it does not pose a tsunami threat to countries within or around the Indian Ocean basin. The bulletin was issued in collaboration with the UNESCO/IOC Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System, ensuring coordinated disaster preparedness efforts across the region.
