Colombo, June 16 (Daily Mirror) - A new causeway-type bridge will be constructed across the Angamuwa Spill on the Thambuththegama–Rajanganaya Highway to replace the existing box-culvert structure, following Cabinet approval for a major infrastructure upgrade aimed at improving connectivity and flood resilience.

The existing structure, located on the route linking the Anuradhapura–Padeniya and Anuradhapura–Puttalam highways, lies in a low-lying area and frequently becomes impassable during the rainy season due to flooding. Authorities have also identified that its current capacity is insufficient to meet future irrigation and water management demands in the region.

The proposed project will establish a new causeway-type bridge at the same location with enhanced capacity, supported through provisions of the Eppawala, Giribawa, Rajanganaya and Nochchiyagama Combined Water Supply Project implemented by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board.

The project is expected to strengthen transport reliability along the key highway network while also supporting long-term water management needs in surrounding agricultural and settlement areas.

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the proposal submitted jointly by the Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development and the Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply to implement the project at an estimated cost of Rs. 241.45 million.
