Naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture into the sea due to the formation of a low-pressure atmospheric disturbance over the Southeast Bay of Bengal today, the  Meteorology Department said.

They warned about the movement of the low-pressure area to the west-northwest and could intensify into a depression over the south-west Bay of Bengal area around today.

Thereafter, the low-pressure area is likely to move gradually west-  northwestwards and reach the east coast of Sri Lanka on February 1.

Wind speeds will be between 40 and 45 km/h and could intensify up to 60 km/h in coastal areas.

Heavy showers or thundershowers and very rough or rough seas could also be expected in above sea areas. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
