Colombo, May 22 (Daily Mirror) - Heavy rainfall pounding the Kalu Ganga Basin has triggered a warning of possible minor flooding in several low-lying areas of Ratnapura District within the next few hours, authorities said.
According to the Irrigation Department, water level data recorded at hydrological gauging stations in the Kalu Ganga Basin indicate that a minor flood situation is likely to occur in vulnerable floodplain areas.
The affected Divisional Secretariat Divisions are Ratnapura, Kuruwita, Ayagama, Elapatha and Kiriella.
Residents living in low-lying areas have been urged to remain highly vigilant and take precautionary measures to safeguard lives and property as water levels continue to rise following persistent rains.
Motorists and passengers travelling through flood-prone roads in the affected regions have also been advised to exercise extreme caution due to possible inundation and hazardous conditions.
Disaster Management authorities have been requested to take necessary action and closely monitor the evolving situation.
