Colombo, May 22 (Daily Mirror) - John Keells CG Auto (JKCG) has denied allegations that it had prior knowledge of the recent temporary surcharge imposed on imported motor vehicles and had established Letters of Credit (LCs) just before the relevant Gazette notification was issued.
In a statement issued today (22), JKCG said public references had alleged that certain vehicle importers, including the company, had opened LCs on the day immediately preceding Gazette notification No. 2488/56 dated May 15, 2026, which introduced the temporary surcharge.
Rejecting the claims, JKCG stated that it had “no prior knowledge” of the surcharge and that no LCs had been established for BYD vehicles on the day immediately before the Gazette notification.
The company further said that the most recent orders for BYD vehicles had been placed between March and April 30, 2026, and that no LCs had been established after that date, including during May 2026.
JKCG stated that, as a major player in the motor vehicle market, it places orders regularly in the ordinary course of business.
The company also reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, good governance and compliance with all applicable laws and regulations while continuing to serve customers within the prevailing regulatory framework.
