Import tax on dhal, canned fish, Big Onions and sugar lifted

The Government had lifted the import tax on several essential items such as dhal, canned fish, Big Onions and sugar with effect from midnight today, the President’s Media Division said.

They said the taxes were lifted after taking into consideration the rising cost of living amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Accordingly, a tin of canned fish (large) will be Rs.200, a kilogram of big onions will be Rs.100 and a kilogram of sugar will be Rs.85 from tonight.

Consumers who purchase other essential items worth over Rs.500 from a Sathosa outlet could obtain a kilogram of dhal for Rs.150.

They said consumers could purchase coconuts at a fair price from Sathosa outlets, due to an increased supply of coconuts in the Colombo District by the Coconut Development Authority. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
