Colombo, Jan. 21 (Daily Mirror) - Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe (Jnr) PC, today stated that he is not above the law and that any decision taken by him is open to challenge before court if it is wrong.
The Attorney General made these remarks when a group of lawyers visited him at the Attorney General’s Department to express their solidarity in the wake of recent social media posts that targeted the Attorney General and his office.
“I am not above the law. If I make a mistake, there are remedies available before the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court to challenge it,” the Attorney General stated.
The lawyers who met the Attorney General pledged their fullest support for him to carry out his duties independently and without interference.
Among those present were former Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) President Upul Jayasuriya, PC, Maithri Gunaratne, PC, and Nalinda Indatissa, PC.
Meanwhile, in a statement issued yesterday, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka strongly emphasised that it is the duty of the Government and law enforcement agencies to ensure that there is no unwarranted interference with the exercise of the powers of the Attorney General. The BASL stressed that safeguarding the independence of the Office of the Attorney General is vital to the protection of the rule of law.
