Colombo, April 22 (Daily Mirror) - In a move aimed at revitalising the country’s tourism industry and easing urban transportation, the government has planned to launch a comprehensive boat service utilising the island’s extensive coastline and inland waterways, Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said.
Addressing the weekely brefing to announce Cabinet decisions today, he said that the government is focusing on harnessing the potential of Sri Lanka’s abundant water resources to develop a modern marine and inland water transport network.
As part of the initiative, the government plans to introduce passenger boat services along key coastal routes such as Puttalam to Fort, Fort to Galle and Galle to Matara. The project aims not only to enhance connectivity and convenience for commuters but also to attract both local and international tourists seeking scenic and efficient travel options.
In addition to marine routes, inland waterways including the Hamilton Canal, Beira Lake, Diyawanna Oya, and Madu Ganga have been identified as promising channels for tourism-oriented boat services. These areas offer untapped potential for eco-tourism and cultural tours, the Minister said.
To ensure the project’s viability, the Cabinet Ministers has approved a proposal presented by the Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister to conduct a detailed feasibility study. Based on its outcomes, the proposed water transport service will be implemented as a public-private partnership, encouraging private sector involvement in infrastructure development and service operation.
The initiative is expected to provide a sustainable and scenic alternative to traditional transport methods, while also strengthening Sri Lanka's appeal as a premier tourist destination.
