Four killed in elephant attacks across 3 districts in March: DMC reports

Colombo, March 18 (Daily Mirror) - While issuing an island-wide incident summary, the Disaster Management Center (DMC) today reported that four persons from the Moneragala, Anuradhapura and Hambantota districts were killed in elephant attacks between March 10 and 13.

A total of seven persons have been killed, and 214 individuals from 60 families in ten districts have been affected by natural disasters. The remaining deaths occurred in Galle (2) and Puttalam (1) due to drowning and falling trees.

Two persons were injured in the Jaffna district due to high winds. Forty-six houses were partially damaged in Ratnapura (15), Kegalle (6), Jaffna (3), Trincomalee (3), Anuradhapura (2), and Galle (17). Additionally, one house in Jaffna was completely destroyed due to high winds.

No affected individuals were relocated to safe houses or separate locations.

Due to heavy rainfall, six spill gates of the Ulhitiya Ratkinda Reservoir have been opened by four feet. Four spill gates of the Kala Wewa and Rajanganaya reservoirs have been opened by two feet. People living downstream have been advised to remain vigilant due to a sudden increase in water levels.

Meanwhile, one lane at the 12th-mile post in the Karandagolla area on the Ella-Wellawaya road has been opened for vehicle movement 24 hours a day from today. The road was previously closed from 6:30 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. due to a minor landslide.

The Dematawalhinna road on the Hali-Ela route has been temporarily closed for a few days due to minor landslides, the DMC reported.
