The Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) opened the new week on a measured note as indices posted mild losses amid global uncertainty and cautious investor sentiment. Despite the slight pullback, the session reflected healthy underlying participation and sector-specific interest.

The All Share Price Index (ASPI) closed at 15,599.61, down 16.96 points or 0.11 percent, while the S&P SL20 Index edged lower by 3.02 points or 0.07 percent to end at 4,621.22. The ASPI saw a strong start, briefly surpassing the 15,700 mark in early trading, before easing as the day progressed on profit-taking and lack of strong directional cues.

Turnover was recorded at Rs. 1.17 billion with a share volume of 42.36 million, pointing to steady retail activity and selective institutional engagement.

In terms of index contribution, Central Finance Company PLC (CFIN.N) and Lanka IOC PLC (LIOC.N) provided the highest positive impact, while Hayleys PLC (HAYL.N), Lion Brewery (LION.N), and John Keells Holdings (JKH.N) were among the top negative contributors. A total of 81 stocks added positively to the ASPI against 86 negative contributors, indicating a fairly balanced market breadth.

In a key development, Lanka IOC PLC became the first listed company to release its March quarter financials, marking the official start of the quarterly earnings season. Early results are expected to guide investor sentiment over the coming sessions as market participants reassess valuations and growth outlooks. also, Lankem Developments PLC announced that its 2025 Rights Issue of 40 million shares at Rs.15.00 each has been oversubscribed, raising a total of Rs. 752.56 million, including applications for additional shares.

As the week progresses, investors will remain attentive to both local earnings releases and evolving global macro signals. With sector-specific activity gaining traction and the results season underway, near-term market direction may hinge on forward guidance.
