The reason for the total loss incurred so far by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) was owing to stupid decisions taken by the politicians, Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) chairman Janaka Rathnayaka said.

Addressing the media after appearing before the Human Rights Commission (HRC) this morning, he said a stupid political decision was taken in 2014 to reduce the electricity tariff by 25%, and with that revision, the CEB incurred a loss of Rs. 50 billion per year.

The PUCSL was summoned before the commission yesterday morning for an inquiry over their failure to prevent power cuts during the Advanced Level examination.

"Even the present Power and Energy Minister has made a firm decision to impose power cuts, despite the Advanced Level (A/L) examinations are underway, and to raise the electricity tariff," he explained.

"The present minister also stands by stupid decisions, and those decisions were taken by him without using his mind," the chairman charged. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
