2022 Yala yields 3,207kg paddy per hectare: Report

A total of 3,207kg of paddy per hectare has been recorded in the 2022 Yala season, the Agriculture Department said citing a report presented at a progress review meeting recently.

The meeting also discussed the expected paddy harvest and paddy cultivation in the 2023 Maha season.  

The report said:

“The farmers had started cultivation only on 248,000 hectares of paddy in 2022 before the urea fertilizer was distributed for the 2022 Yala season.

According to a decision taken by the present Government, steps were taken to provide urea in the 2022 Yala season. However, 65,500 metric tons of urea were imported under an Indian credit line and distributed among the farmers.

“Then many other farmers resumed paddy cultivation, and the total area under paddy cultivation rose to 512,000 hectares.

“Sri Lanka produces 2.5 million metric tons of paddy during peak seasons. In 2021, 3.3 million metric tons were harvested, compared to 1.6 million metric tons harvested the previous year.

“It is a reduction of about 48 per cent of the harvest in a Maha season.

“However, the farmers say that due to the high quality of urea fertilizer given in the Yala season, the fields were fertile,” the report said. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
