An individual who was assaulted and tied to a tree on suspicion of attempting to break open the charity box in Getambe Diyakapanathota temple had succumbed to his injuries.
The villagers had caught him when he was frequenting the temple ground and assaulted him and then tied him to a tree. However, he had later been found dead. Police said he was a 47 year old man from Menikhinna area. Investigations revealed that he had arrived on a motorcycle and that he had been wearing a white helmet similar to that of the traffic police.
HQI Kandy police CI Rasika Sampath is investigating the incident on the instructions of SSP Anuruddha Bandaranayake.
