As the wedding season approaches in Sri Lanka, we had the pleasure of chatting with one of the island’s most acclaimed hair and makeup artists, Prabath Gamage. With an impressive portfolio and a reputation for creating stunning bridal looks, Prabath recently had the opportunity to collaborate with renowned fashion designer Sabyasaachi Mukherjee. We sat down with Prabath to hear about his experience working in India and to gain insight into his approach to bridal hair and makeup.

What was the most memorable aspect of working with Sabyasachi Mukherjee on his recent fashion show in India?

Collaborating with Sandhya Shekar for the Sabyasachi fashion show in India was an unforgettable experience. If I had to highlight one aspect that truly stood out, it would undoubtedly be the exceptional level of professionalism maintained throughout the entire process. From the initial planning stages to the final execution, every detail was handled with commendable professionalism. Witnessing the meticulous management of every aspect was truly inspiring, making the entire experience both seamless and enjoyable.

I was part of the makeup artist team led by Sandhya Shekar for the show. I had first met Sandhya while working in India when I was her tutor. Starting her professional journey independently in mid-2009, Sandhya has since become one of the most renowned names in the Indian industry. Her client list includes esteemed publications such as Vogue India, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, and Bollywood A-list celebrities like Deepika Padukone. Working with Sandhya and her team was an incredible experience.

How did you adapt your makeup techniques to complement Sabyasachi Mukherjee's signature designs?

Crafting a signature makeup look for a Sabyasachi Mukherjee fashion show is a meticulous process aimed at ensuring that the final appearance harmonizes with the designer’s aesthetic while also reflecting contemporary trends and the creative input of the makeup artists and hairstylists involved. Lead artist, Sandhya Shekar briefed me in advance, and we discussed the show in detail and our collaborative efforts resulted in makeup looks that not only enhanced the beauty of the models but also perfectly complemented the exquisite creations showcased on the runway. The desired effect and overall look were clearly defined to Sandhya by Sabyasachi himself, and our task was to execute his vision to perfection. Working closely with the team, we meticulously translated his vision into reality, ensuring that every detail of the makeup complemented his designs seamlessly.

How did you adapt your makeup and hairstyling techniques to complement Sabyasachi Mukherjee's signature designs?

Working with Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s signature designs was a fantastic opportunity to showcase my makeup skills in a way that complemented his aesthetic perfectly. Sabyasachi’s designs are known for their intricate detailing, rich colors, and timeless elegance, and I knew that my makeup techniques needed to complement and enhance these elements.

What inspires your creativity when crafting makeup and hairstyle looks for high-profile fashion events like this?

My creativity is inspired by a variety of sources. Firstly, I draw inspiration from the designer’s vision and the theme of the collection. Understanding the story behind the designs helps me to create makeup and hairstyle looks that complement and enhance the overall aesthetic. I also take inspiration from current fashion trends, as well as from historical and cultural references. High-profile fashion events often provide an opportunity to push boundaries and try new techniques, so I stay up to date with the latest trends and experiment with different styles to create looks that are both on-trend and unique. Additionally, I consider the venue and the audience when crafting makeup and hairstyle looks for fashion events.

Whether it’s a glamorous red-carpet event or an avant-garde fashion show, I tailor the looks to suit the occasion and ensure that they make an impact. Ultimately, my goal is to create makeup and hairstyle looks that not only complement the designer’s creations but also reflect my own creativity and skill as an artist. By drawing inspiration from a variety of sources and staying open to new ideas, I am able to craft looks that are both beautiful and memorable.

You are one of Sri Lanka’s finest bridal stylists, how do you adapt your make-up and hairstyling techniques to complement different brides?

My approach to makeup and hairstyling revolves around enhancing the natural beauty of each bride while complementing her individual style and personality. I begin with a personalized consultation to understand the bride's vision for her wedding day look, considering her outfit, accessories, and preferences. My goal is always to enhance the bride's natural beauty, focusing on flawless skin and accentuating her best features.

I tailor the makeup look to suit her skin tone, facial features, and personal style, whether she prefers a natural, dewy look or something more dramatic. Similarly, I adapt my hairstyling techniques to create a look that complements her overall style and wedding theme, considering factors such as face shape and hair texture. Attention to detail is paramount, from the placement of individual hair strands to the blending of eyeshadow colors. By taking a personalized approach and focusing on enhancing the bride's natural beauty, I ensure that every bride looks and feels absolutely stunning on her special day.

What are some popular bridal makeup trends that you've noticed gaining traction recently?

While there are several popular bridal makeup trends gaining traction recently, I prefer to adopt a timeless, elegant, and classical style for my brides. I believe in creating looks that will stand the test of time and make my brides feel beautiful and confident on their special day. Instead of following trends, I focus on enhancing each bride's natural beauty and creating a look that reflects her individual style and personality. My goal is to create a timeless and elegant makeup look that will look just as beautiful in photographs years from now as it does on the wedding day.

Follow a Consistent Skincare Routine: Stick to a basic skincare routine that includes cleansing, toning, and moisturizing twice daily. Use products that are suitable for your skin type to keep your skin clear and healthy.

Protect Your Skin from the Sun: Wear sunscreen every day to protect your skin from sun damage. This will help prevent sunspots and premature aging.

Get Plenty of Sleep: Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep each night to allow your skin time to repair and regenerate.

Eat a Healthy Diet: Focus on eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. This will help keep your skin looking clear and radiant.
