No tsunami warning

No tsunami warning has been issued for Sri Lanka and the public should not panic unnecessarily, the Disaster Management Centre says. Reports surfaced that those in the Negombo area had begun emergency evacuations fearing a tsunami.

“We have early warning systems in place all over the island, including the Negombo area and we have not issued a tsunami warning. There are regional offices of the Disaster Management Centre in every district and we have a comprehensive system in place with the help of the three armed forces—we work all 24 hours and the public has nothing to worry about,” Spokesman for the Disaster Management Centre Pradeep Kodippili told the Daily Mirror.

Communities in the coastal areas have begun to panic and evacuate, based on unverified predictions issued last week.  (DS)
