Mangala out on bail

UNP MP Mangala Samaraweera and two others who surrendered to court this morning were released with two suties of Rs 100,000 each by the Matara Magistrate today.

The two others released on bail were Devinuwara UNP Organiser H.R. Wimalasiri and Balapitiya UNP Organiser Kamal Soysa.

Six others, including Southern provincial councillor B.G. Chandana Priyantha, who also surrendered to the Matara police were remanded till October 21 and would be produced at an identifications parade.

Mr. Samaraweera surrendered to police this morning through his lawyers Rusan Koggala Hewa, Rasanga Waransuriya, Nanda Muruthettuwegama and Dammika Ambepitiya. Later he was arrested by the Matara Crime Investigation Branch and his statement recorded for about one hour. When the police were preparing to take him to court he requested that he be handcuffed.

While granting bail the Magistrate also directed them to report to Matara SSP’s office on the last Sunday of every month and to appear in court on October 21.  They were warned not to interfere with the witnesses in any manner whatsoever.Pix and news by Krishan Jeewaka Jayaruk
