Director General of the Media Center for National Security, Lakshman Hulugalle said today that he had proof to believe that the cause of the shooting in Katuwana was due to an internal conflict within the JVP.

“I have proof of the various allegations of violence that had been made against each other by JVP factions and this is why I said that the shooting can be linked to this. What I said was that I suspect that this was the cause,” he said at a media conference today.

Police chief N.K.Illangakone says the Police cannot arrest the prime suspect of Katuwana double murder only because one eye witness named him as the suspect who fired upon the JVP meeting on Friday without other evidence that would establish his involvement.

Addressing the media at the Media Center for National Security yesterday (MCNS) IGP, Mr. Illangakone while admitting that the suspect ‘Julampitiye Amare’s name had been mentioned in one of the statements recorded by the police as the person who led the assault on unarmed JVP supporters, he said, the police wants more evidence to prove that he did the crime.

Confronted with incidents where suspects have been arrested by mentioning only the name by victims, Mr. Illnagakone refuted it and said the police in this case needs more evidence to arrest and produce the criminals in courts.

“Yes, he is a hardcore criminal who has a number of murder, rape and burglary cases against him and is on warrant as he is evading court proceedings. The police arrested his sureties and they are now in jail,” Mr. Illangakone said.( by Sandun A. Jayasekara &Pradeep Pathirana)
