Former Law College Principal W.D Rodrigo who left the Law College under a cloud in November last year has been appointed Legal Director of the Presidential Secretariat from January 29.

Speaking to Daily Mirror Mr. Rodrigo said his appointment came as a result of, “being the most educated lawyer in the country”.

“As you are aware I’m a President’s Counsel and the most educated lawyer in the country having completed my Doctorate in law from the University of Queensland. I have been appointed by his Excellency the President to handle all his legal affairs,” he said.

When asked about the allegations against him, Mr. Rodrigo declined to comment.

“I don’t want to comment on it. I have written to the Press Council and I await an inquiry on it,” he said.

Meanwhile highly placed sources at the Council of Legal education -- the body which oversees the functioning of the law college -- told the Daily Mirror that there were allegations of ‘examination irregularities’ by Mr. Rodrigo.

After Mr. Rodrigo left there was an immediate overhaul of the entire procedural and administrative structure of the College.

During a recent meeting convened at the Law College, Chief Justice Mohan Peiris said, “there will be no more room for nepotism and the only criteria for passing exams will be merit.” (By Hafeel Farisz and Jehan Gunasekara)
