There is a trend among inmates to be incarcerated after being released, a survey conducted by prison officials revealed. It said a person had been detained 27 times in various prisons countrywide.

Commenting on this, Prisons and Rehabilitation Superintendent Anees Deen said several inmates between 20 to 60 years of age made it a habit to engage in something illegal to return to prison soon after they were released.

“These inmates believe their lives in prison are more comfortable than at home as they receive hygienic food and as security is assured. They like prison life because they are surrounded by like-minded inmates. The Prisons Department spends more than Rs.3 million a day for 4,700 inmates with short-term detention of three months to one year,” he said. (Indika Sri Aravinda)
