No quorum, PC polls debate put off

25 January 2019 07:37 pm

The adjournment debate on the provincial council elections ended abruptly in parliament today in the absence of quorum.

It ended two and a half hours earlier than the scheduled time of 7.30 pm because there were two members short for the 20-member quorum.

The quorum issue was raised by UNP MP Lakshman Wijemanne. UNP MP Tusitha Wijemanne who was presiding at the time called for the ringing of the quorum bell but with only 18 members present in the Chamber, the sessions were adjourned till February 5.

Hambantota District UPFA MP D. V. Chanaka, who was on his feet at the time of adjournment, accused the UNP of being scared to face a debate on the PC elections.

“If the UNP is scared of even a debate one can imagine how scared they are of elections,” he said. (Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)
