Notorious drug kingpin Mohommad Najim Mohammad Imran alias Kanjipani Imran and three others who were arrested along with ‘Makandure Madush’ in Dubai recently, were taken under CID custody at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) this morning, Police Spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekera said.
He said the suspects had arrived at the country on FlyDubai flight FZ 547 at around 6.15 a.this morning after being deported from Dubai.
He said Kanjipani Imran and Janga had planned to travel to the Maldives through Sri Lanka.
The Spokesman said the law enforcement officers at the BIA monitoring the passengers arriving from Dubai and the suspects name were on the passenger's list at the BIA.
According to investigations, three of them had residence visas in Dubai.
Meanwhile, Amila Sampath reportedly left for Dubai in 2017 and was granted residence visa on October 11, 2017. He had been working at a fuel station in Dubai. The spokesman said he was wanted over the murder in Urubokka in 2005.
Anushka Kaushal alias Janga, who is a close accomplice of Makandure Madush has last visited Dubai on February 3 this year and he had a Dubai residence visa since 2017.
According to the investigations, Janga wanted over murder in Matara in 2000 and had been issued a warrant for the possession of a hand grenade in 2001 in Matara.
Janga would also be questioned over the recovery of stock of army uniforms and T56 live bullets which found from a house of Janga in February by the police during a raid in Talalla.
The Spokesman said Kanjipani Imran would be handed over to the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) while Janga and Amila Sampath would be handed over to the Matara Division police.
Thirty-one suspects including Makandure Madush, singer Amal Perera and his son Nadeemal, were arrested at a luxury hotel in Dubai on February 4.
On Tuesday (26), singer Amal Perera’s son Nadeemal Perera and former prison guard K. Lalith Kumara who were arrested in Dubai have also been deported to the country.
The CID released Nadeemal Perera after recording a statement from him while the prison guard was arrested after handed over to the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD).
The Spokesman said the prison guard would be produced in the Kalutara Magistrate’s Court seeking 48-hour detention order. He would be questioned by the CCD over his involvement with the shooting incident at Ethanamadala, in Kalutara in 2017 where seven persons including a prominent underworld figure Aruna Udayashantha alias Samayan and two prison officers were killed when a prison bus was shot.
Investigations revealed that Makandure Madush and prison guard K. Lalith Kumara had been friends since their childhood. It was reported that the prison guard has leaked the information to the shooters to carry out the shooting on the prison bus.(Darshana Sanjeewa)
