The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court has today directed the IGP to remove Peliyagoda Police Station from the investigation into the alleged assault on law student Migara Gunaratne and direct it to another Special Investigation Unit.

When the case was taken up before Colombo Additional Magistrate Bandara Nelundeniya, President’s Counsel Saliya Peiris who appeared for Migara Gunaratne requested the Court to remove the above investigation from the Peliyagoda Police and referred it to another Special Investigation Unit.

President’s Counsel Tirantha Walaliyadda who appeared for the Police also made the same request and told the Court to hand over the investigation to another unit in order to conduct it impartially and independently.

After considering the facts presented by both parties, the Additional Magistrate ordered the case to be called on March 15.

The son of former Central Province Governor Maithri Gunaratne was allegedly attacked by a group of policemen at the Peliyagoda Police Station on February 25. (Yoshitha Perera)
