Health authorities warn of notable spike in dengue cases

In the midst of the COVID- 19 outbreak in Sri Lanka,health authorities warned of a notable spike in dengue cases in the oncoming weeks due to the flood situation following the torrential downpour.  

National Dengue Control Unit Director Dr. Aruna Jayasekara told Daily Mirror that the Colombo district was at a higher risk compared to others, as one third of cases are reported from the Colombo District.  

“In addition, we have identified seven more districts as high risk areas, where dengue could strike in coming weeks. The districts are Gampaha, Kalutara, Galle, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Kurunegala and Kandy,” Dr. Jayasekara underscored.  

Dr. Jayasekara said there could be a sharp increase in the number of cases reported this year when compared with last year and added the number of cases and deaths usually increases in the months of June, July and August and November.   

“The most number of deaths and patients has been reported from the Western province. Moreover, four deaths related to dengue have been so far reported,” Dr. Jayasekara said.   According to the Epidemiology Unit, 7,932 dengue cases have been reported from all parts of the country during this year as at yesterday.  The Western Province with 2,344 dengue cases is the highest among the provinces.
